The Summer Heat & Humidity and it’s effect on odors.
By Jon | June 19, 2010
During the hot summers here in Nashville, I will often hear from new customers looking for carpet cleaning and as I probe deeper often the reason for cleaning is to eliminate odors. Odors in a home can be tricky to solve, and often a simple carpet cleaning (although it might help) will not solve the issue. As the humidity and heat rises, often the bacteria in the odor, if it is organic in nature will be reactivated and start to off gas causing a foul odor in the home. This can sometimes be a big issue when its time to sell the home, and I’m often called by realtors looking for a solution.
Sometimes if it is a very mild odor, a very thorough carpet cleaning may do the trick…..but if it has been an ongoing problem, it may require sealing the sub floor and replacing the pad to completely solve the issue. A true professional will have devices such as moister meters and ultraviolet lights to detect the source and in many cases the carpet will need to be disengaged to examine the subfloor to get a true picture of the extent of the damage. In my company, all pet odor situations must be examined in person to provide an estimate……if you find a company that will provide an estimate for this kind of work over the phone…..”Run Forest……Run!!!!

Are All Of These Certifications Really Necessary?
By Jon | December 13, 2009
Well the simple answer is yes……..but there is so much more to this answer. Often customers will ask me what it takes to become certified in carpet and upholstery cleaning or attain my level of “IICRC Master Cleaner” The IICRC or The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification has served as the Industry Guardian for the cleaning, inspection and restoration service industries for more than 30 years. As a non-profit certification organization, the IICRC helps ensure that you have access to trusted and trained cleaning professionals by establishing and monitoring certification programs and standards for these industries.
To qualify for IICRC-Certified Firm status businesses must demonstrate proof of insurance, maintain a written customer complaint policy with documented follow-up and provide ongoing education and training leading to certification for all technicians. IICRC Certified Firms are also required to abide by the IICRC Code of Ethics. Services provided by IICRC–Certified professionals range from flooring inspection and cleaning to mold remediation to water and fire damage restoration.
As a final note, it is my opinion that if a company is not certified I question what other short cuts in establishing their business have been taken that may reflect in the quality of their work and overall integrity of their business. To find a IICRC Certified Firm in your area go to : http://www.iicrc.org/ Always ask if your cleaner is certified, and if they respond with yes, ask for the name of the certifying body and inspect their laminated wallet card, it will state if they are a certified firm (very important, because they offer stand alone technician certification) and if they are current on all of their insurance requirements and education. All Certified Firms are recertified every year and the best way to make sure is to check the IICRC website or call them at 1-800-835-4624.

Don’t be Fooled by the $99 Carpet Cleaning Companies!
By Jon | July 15, 2009
With the economy in such a sad state, and unemployment on the rise, there have been so many advertisements for carpet cleaning at truely unbelievable prices. The ads show a truck mounted cleaning plant and a uniformed technician with a big smile, but what shows up is someone in a t-shirt and jeans, using a rental Rug Doctor out of the back of his car……no insurance, no real knowledge of how to clean carpet. This spells disaster for a home owner, take the time to ask for certificates of insurance and references…..if there is any hesitation on their part, it may serve you well to keep looking for a responsible, insured, knowledgable company. There is just no way that a legitimate service provider, who has expenses like liability insurance, workers comp insurance, taxes, advertising, vehicle expense(insurance, fuel, van) and a average $75,000.00 investment in a service van and truck mounted cleaning equipment could come to your home and do much the way of services for the magic number of $99. So when a cleaning company tells you they can can do several rooms of carpeting cleaning for these unbelievable prices, is it really a deal?

Those ugly dark lines at the edges of the carpet!
By Jon | June 8, 2009
Hello Everyone!
I’m often asked about those ugly dark lines at the base boards. This is better known as filtration soil. What are soil filtration lines? Soil filtration lines are ugly dark lines – usually from 1 to 3 inches in width - that often show up in homes along the baseboards, under doors, along stairways, around furnace vents. What are they?
Filtration soiling is caused by smog, soot, dust, carbon monoxide and other microscopic airborne pollutants that pass through the carpet pile. As the pollutants pass through the carpet, the fibers act as a filter to remove the fine particles of airborne soil. The pollutants build up in the carpet and slowly turn from light gray to black.
Can this be corrected? We here at Ultra Color Care, never promise that we can totally remove this type of soiling, but rather just make an improvement.
It seems that homes closer to higher levels of traffic, often have the worst cases of this issue. If you have an issue with filtration soiling in Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin, or Spring Hill…..give us a call for a Free No Obligation evaluation.
